BAGHLAN – At least 45 Afghan security personnel were killed in a Taliban attack on a security base in the northern Baghlan province of Afghanistan on Tuesday night, a security source confirmed on Wednesday.

The attack is said to be the second large-scale attack in two days on a military base after one in Faryab on Monday.

The attack happened after Taliban insurgents attacked Allahuddin base in Baghlan-e-Markazi district of the province, a police source confirmed, adding that “35 army soldiers and 10 local policemen were also killed.”

The district police have confirmed the attack but have not given details about casualties, however, security officials from the center have not yet commented about the attack.

In the past two days, two large military bases have been targeted by the Taliban in the country in which dozens of security forces members were killed.

On Monday, local officials in the northern province of Faryab confirmed that Afghan troops have surrendered to the Taliban after their base – Chenayeeha – fell to Taliban in Ghormach district in the province.

The base reportedly remained under Taliban siege for 48 hours. According to local officials, over 40 security members surrendered to the Taliban after they received no help nor ammunition supplies despite repeated requests from the center.

Mohammad Tahir Rahmani, head of Faryab provincial council, also confirmed that the troops surrendered.
